Young woman assaulted under Kilmarnock railway bridge as police launch manhunt

Police have launched a manhunt after a woman was assaulted under a railway bridge in Kilmarnock at the weekend.

The 24-year-old was walking along Bonnyton Road in the direction of Munro Avenue when a man approached her shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The man, who spoke in broken English, tried to engage the woman in conversation and as she reached the railway bridge, the suspect assaulted her before fleeing on a push bike, possibly in the direction of Warwickhill Road.

The assailant is described as Eastern European, aged mid 20s and around 5ft 8in tall.

Police say the woman was not seriously injured following the attack but has been left shaken by the ordeal.

Now cops are appealing for anyone who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage to come forward.

Detective Inspector Stuart Dougan said: "The woman was not seriously injured during this incident but has understandably been left very shaken by what happened.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw a man matching this description on a bike to please come forward if you have not already.

"If you are a local resident and have CCTV or a driver with a dash-cam, please check back and see if there is any footage that could assist our enquiries. Information can be provided by calling us on 101, quoting reference number 0214 of 25 July.

"I would like to reassure members of the public that this is believed to be an isolated incident and we are doing everything we can to identify the man responsible.

"Our officers will continue to patrol the area over the coming days. If you have any concerns, or any information in relation to the incident, please do speak to them or contact police on 101."
