Young mum yelled support for IRA during violent incident at Monklands Hospital

A female yob yelled support for the IRA during an aggressive episode at University Monklands Hospital.

Michelle Johnstone, 22, entered the facility on April 2 looking for treatment.

Johnstone, of Ayr, screamed, “up the RA” and “up the hoops”, during her unacceptable outburst.

She also verbally abused police and kicked an officer while being taken to Coatbridge police office.

Later that month, Johnstone behaved in a threatening and abusive manner at Jackson Court, Coatbridge.

She again threatened violence to police officers.

Describing the first incident, the procurator fiscal told Airdrie Sheriff Court last week: “She attended University Hospital Monklands for treatment.

“While there she was disruptive and disorderly, shouting and swearing and banging her head off walls.

“She was seen by a nurse who contacted police who found the accused to be under the influence of alcohol. She was angry and unwilling to speak with them.

“She called officers “pig b*******” and "bacon scum”.

Johnstone smirked as the fiscal continued: “She then shouted ‘Ooh, ah, up the RA’, and ‘up the hoops’.

“She was warned but didn’t calm down so was taken to Coatbridge police office. During the journey she kicked a male officer on the leg and tried to headbutt him.”

Johnstone’s defence solcitor said: “She’s currently subject to a community payback order imposed at Ayr Sheriff Court.

“She knows her behaviour is totally unacceptable, so she makes no excuses for that. She has a four-year-old daughter and is in receipt of benefits.

“She’s been binging on alcohol to help with her mental health difficulties, but in the last few years her life has spiralled out of control.

“As a result of alcohol she’s lost contact with her daughter. She wants that contact back and her actions have to speak louder than words.”

Sheriff David Young said: “One of these incidents took place in a hospital and for that I’ll impose 106 hours of unpaid work.

“On the second matter I’ll impose 135 hours of unpaid work so that’s a total of 241 to be done in the next nine months. You’ll also be under supervision for 18 months on the completion of your current order.”
