April 08--REPORTING FROM BEIJING -- The Chinese special-forces action film "Wolf Warriors" clawed its way to the top of China's mainland box office last week, earning $34.3 million in its first four days of release during the annual tomb-sweeping holiday.
"Wolf Warriors," directed by and starring Jacky Wu (aka Wu Jing) alongside British martial artist Scott Adkins, outfoxed 20th Century Fox's "Kingsman: The Secret Service," figures from film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway showed.
The comedic spy film from "X-Men: First Class" director Matthew Vaughn, starring Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson, has earned $55.7 million since its March 27 release in China, despite opening more than six weeks after its stateside release.
The romantic comedy "Let's Get Married," adapted from a Chinese TV show, landed in third place for the seven days ending Sunday, pulling in $23.9 million.
The Hong Kong thriller "Insanity" placed fourth with $4.4 million. Directed by David Lee Kwong-yiu, the film tells of what happens when a schizophrenic man who was convicted of manslaughter is released by his doctor from a psychiatric facility.
Rounding out the top five was Disney's "Cinderella," which crossed the $70-million mark.
