Why the M5 has been so bad near Bristol today

A two-car crash brought the M5 near Bristol to a standstill and then a crawl today (Monday, September 20).

The collision happened near Cribbs Causeway at around 11.30am and delays continued until 1.30pm.

The two cars had crashed between junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway and junction 18 for the M48.

Traffic was initially held to allow the cars to be cleared off the main carriageway and on to the hard shoulder

At the height of the delays, there was stop-start traffic for 10 miles, with journey delays by more than 40 minutes.

While a lorry overturned on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge at around 11.30am, caused more problems towards the M5 past lunchtime.

Traffic and travel service Inrix said at 1.45pm: "M4 Prince Of Wales Bridge Eastbound exit slip road closed long delays, queueing traffic due to overturned lorry at J22 M49. Congestion to J23 (M48 Interchange)."

There were also delays towards the M5 as traffic had no access to the M49 southbound.
