Why did someone walk miles up a remote moor to smash up an old stone cabin?

Police have launched an investigation after a stone cabin on remote moorland was smashed up by vandals.

Hundreds of stones have been torn from the walls of the hut near Glossop .

Pictures show substantial damage to the gable end of the cabin, with piles of rubble strewn on the ground below.

A large hole can also be seen above the door.

The remote hut on Hurst and Chunal Moor is used as shelter by gamekeepers.

In a statement on Facebook Derbyshire police said: "We’re appealing for information after a very old stone cabin on moorland near to Glossop has been damaged.

"Stones were removed and damaged caused to the cabin, in a remote location on the Hurst and Chunal Moor, on land near to Hague Street sometime between Thursday, May 9 and Monday, May 13.

"The damage to the hut, which is used by gamekeepers, is substantial and we would like to hear from anyone with any information which could help with our inquiries."

Members of the public have reacted with disbelief to the vandalism.

On Facebook Laraine French wrote: "Oh that’s terrible why would anyone want to do that? What the hell is up with people that want to destroy things all the time?" 

And Carol Anne Harrow posted: "Fancy walking all that way to try and destroy an old building. Doesn't make sense."
