The White Sox are promoting first-round draft choice Garrett Crochet to the active roster Friday, general manager Rick Hahn said.
Crochet, a hard-throwing left-hander from Tennessee selected with the 11th pick in June, will take the roster spot of right-handed reliever Evan Marshall, who landed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation.
Marshall, one of the Sox’ most valuable late-inning relievers, should be back by next weekend, Hahn said. Crochet potentially could be placed on the playoff roster.
“We want to see what he has to offer over the course of the next 10 days,” Hahn said.
Crochet has been working at Schaumburg.
“The stuff speaks for itself,” Hahn said. “We know the stuff will play long term. We’re just going to see his composure and ability to attack big league hitters. It’s not a small task. We felt given the ability and tools it was a worthwhile opportunity to see if he could be a fit for us.”
The Sox have three games against the Reds this weekend, followed by four at Cleveland before finishing the season against the Cubs at home next weekend. Hahn also said left-handers Aaron Bummer and Carlos Rodon might return before the regular season is over, and that Bummer is traveling with the team on the road trip. Rodon is at the team’s training facility in Schaumburg.
In one other roster move, right-hander Ian Hamilton was designated for assignment.
The Sox (33-17) own the best record in the American League and clinched their first postseason berth since 2008 Thursday with a 4-3 victory over the Twins.
