When 12 hours of thunderstorms are forecast to hit this weekend

Thunder and lightning storms lasting up to 12 hours are expected to strike Bristol this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, covering a large chunk of the country - including the West of England.

While the Met itself is not currently predicting any storms for Bristol, the BBC forecast is looking more promising for storm lovers.

Overcast and drizzly conditions are predicted throughout today (Saturday), but that should change at about midnight.

From then, the BBC forecast (as of 8am this morning) is for thundery showers all the way through until midday tomorrow (Sunday).

A couple of hours of light rain are then expected to break the stormy spell, with more thunderstorms resuming from 2pm until 5pm, and again from 10pm until 9am on Monday morning.

The storms are not expected to be as powerful as they were on Wednesday, when an amber weather warning was in place.

Lightning lit up the skies as the rain hammered down, but this time only light showers are forecast.

The Met Office's own outlook is on the contrary, predicting showers and sunny spells for Bristol throughout the weekend, despite the weather warning.

Its yellow warning advises of spray on the roads, and potential flooding, travel disruption and power cuts.

This will remain active throughout the weekend until 9pm on Monday (August 17).

The Met's radar showed that, at 7am this morning (Saturday), rain was falling on parts of Bristol at a rate of up to 4mm per hour.

Highs of up to 22C are forecast today, with the temperature expected to reach 23C tomorrow.
