Wet weather warning for drivers after road smash on M9 between Edinburgh and West Lothian

A wet weather warning has been issued for drivers after a car was badly damaged in a road smash on the M9 this morning.

Police have been urging motorists to take extra care during heavy rainfall as there is an increased risk of surface water on the roadway.

They used the example of a bad crash on the M9 at around 6am this morning, near junction two at Philpstoun, in which a red BMW was badly damaged.

Thankfully nobody was hurt in the crash, but police say poor conditions increase the risk to road users.

Road Policing Scotland took to social media to say: "Please be mindful during periods of rain. There is an increased risk of surface water on the road surface. The higher your speed the greater the risk of aquaplaning.

"Please slow down and drive carefully folks. Thankfully no injury on the M9 near J2 this morning."

Yellow weather warnings are in place this afternoon with thunderstorms expected from 4pm. Heavy showers and possible lightning strikes are expected to continue until around 6pm before hail showers arrive.
