Welsh rugby star Ashton Hewitt reveals try celebration for young fan scared by racism

Ashton Hewitt says his try celebration against the Ospreys was in support of a young fan he met after speaking about Black Lives Matter issues.

Hewitt marked his 100th appearance for the Dragons with two tries in their 31-20 PRO14 win in Bridgend.

Afterwards, he explained the gesture was requested by a schoolboy named Ali.

"I asked what I could do for him and he said a try celebration. I asked what he wanted it to be and he did it and said 'A for Ashton and Ali'," said Hewitt.

Ali was among pupils who wrote to the player, before Hewitt then visited them at the request of staff after hearing the winger speak out against racism in interviews.

Hewitt made the gesture after his second try at Brewery Field, which sealed victory for the Dragons.

"He was quite emotional in his letter and said that some of his experiences made him scared, so I was keen to go and see him," added Hewitt.

"That letter was probably one of the biggest things that has hit me throughout this journey in terms of racism and equality.

"I was really glad that I did because he is a great kid and I can't wait to see him again."

Hewitt elaborated on the celebration further on social media on Sunday morning, tweeting out the letter sent to him by Ali.

He tweeted: "You might have clocked a new try celebration last night. I received a powerful letter from a young man called Ali.

"So I went to see him and when he found out I didn’t already have a celebration he suggested ‘A’ for “Ashton & Ali”.

"Big up Ali and I hope to see him soon."

Hewitt has spoken about the letter before, telling the Guardian about the emotional note from Ali a couple of weeks ago.

“He thanked me for speaking out because, and I quote: ‘Racism can make you feel afraid, scared and sad.’ I’ve still got the letter. When a child says it makes them feel scared … that’s the most powerful thing anyone could read," Hewitt said at the time.
