Wallsend school sends some Year 11 pupils home after positive Covid-19 case

A number of Year 11 pupils have been sent home from Burnside College after a student tested positive for coronavirus.

A Year 11 pupil at the Wallsend school has contracted the virus and is self-isolating for a fortnight.

A 'small number' of their classmates who have been in close contact with the case have also been told to stay at home for 14 days.

A letter addressed to parents and carers reads: "We have been advised that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We have carried out a full risk assessment and identified all those who have been in close contact with the affected case and have recommended that they stay at home and self-isolate until 14 days after their last contact."

When ChronicleLive contacted the school, headteacher Daniel Jamieson said: "A Year 11 pupil has been confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus and is self-isolating.

"A small number of Year 11 students are also self-isolating, and we are following the advice of Public Health."

Burnside College is the latest in a growing number of North East schools to be hit by the virus after reopening earlier this month.

It comes after the latest official figures revealed the number of schools in England sending home groups of pupils because of Covid-19 incidents has quadrupled in a week.

Based on attendance statistics last Thursday, 4% of schools are not fully open due to confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus - a rise from 1% the previous week.
