UK weather forecast: Brits to be battered with rain as downpours stamp out heatwave

Britons will be battered by rain today as the short-lived heatwave is replaced by downpours in southern parts of the country.

The rain comes after Brits flocked to the beach yesterday as temperatures soared with parts of the UK being hotter than Mexico.

Beach goers in areas such as Bournemouth, Dorset and Cornwall were able to enjoy scorching temperatures as high as 25C.

But with patchy rain on the way, summer antics will be put on pause.

BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker said: "It is going to turn wet in the south, so through the early hours of the morning we are expecting some rain in Cardiff, Southampton, London and Norwich.

"Mild here at 16 degrees, the north of the country over night with the clear skies will turn very chilling, temperatures can be five, six, and seven degrees out of town.

"Sunday will be a very different day across Wales and the north of England ... in fact clear skies and beautiful weather for Liverpool, for Hull, for Newcastle.

"The south of the country will be cooler and cloudier probably some spits and spots of rain still effecting the extreme south east."

Tomasz added: "Beyond Sunday we are expecting the high pressure to build off the Atlantic and that means that the weather will start to settle down so that will mean a fine start to the week ahead.

"Light winds, plenty of sunshine, just a bit of fair weather cloud building up. A really pleasant summer's day to come for the start of the week.

"Temperatures will be around 22 in London and a little bit fresher in the north at around 17 celsius."

Earlier this week, a swarm of flying ants was spotted on a weather radar and caused interference to the system.

A clod of ants spanning a whopping 50 metres wide was seen in Kent and Sussex.

The Met Office tweeted a video of the swarm and said: "It's not raining in London, Kent or Sussex, but our radar says otherwise.

"The radar is actually picking up a swarm of flying ants across the southeast."

"During the summer ants can take to the skies in a mass emergence usually on warm, humid and windless days flying ant day'."

He said: "It's not unusual for larger swarms to be picked up.'
