Two women have been charged with criminal damage after throwing soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s world famous Sunflowers painting.

Anna Holland, 20, a student in Newcastle, and Phoebe Plummer, 21, from Clapham in south London, are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates court following the incident at the National Gallery on Friday

Also due in court is Lora Johnson, 38, from Southwold in Suffolk who is charged with criminal damage after paint was thrown at the famous revolving sign outside Scotland Yard.

The Metropolitan Police made 28 arrests on Friday in connection with protests organised by the Just Stop Oil environmental group which is demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels.

As well as the three people due in court, 25 others have been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.

The Sunflowers painting was undamaged when two women were filmed throwing tomato soup at it before gluing themselves to the wall beside it.

Friday marked the 14th day of "continuous disruption" by the environmental group, which has also seen protesters block several key roads in the capital.

Action is expected to last for more than a month.
