The Royal Variety Performance
7.30pm, ITV

The shy and retiring David Walliams hosts this year’s date night for Charlie and Camilla at the Hammersmith Apollo. Attractions include the likes of Gary Barlow, Emeli Sandé, Robbie Williams and BGT-winner Lance Corporal Richard Jones, and there are previews of Barlow’s The Girls and An American in Paris, both hitting the West End soon. Also making an appearance – hurrah! – ABC, featuring the lad in lamé, Martin Fry. Ali Catterall

Rillington Place
9pm, BBC1

Concluding part of the factual drama detailing the mundanity of the evil that once lurked in London’s Ladbroke Grove. Timothy Evans’s trial arrives, and with Reg’s sinister charm on show in the courtroom, the outcome seems inevitable. Following the strain of the trial, and the reluctance of Ethel to collude in the charade, will Reg’s true nature be revealed? Tim Roth’s portrayal of the sotto voce psychopath continues to grip as the story reaches a breathtaking conclusion. Mark Gibbings Jones

Elementary
9pm, Sky Living

Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu return for the fifth season of the Sherlock Holmes-inspired series. This opening episode finds Holmes and Watson called in to assist with a manhunt, the person of interest being a notoriously deadly bomber who is once again targeting New York. It’s a tough case even for the eminent detective himself, so Watson calls on former patient Shinwell Johnson (True Blood’s Nelsan Ellis). But is Watson beginning to tire of sleuthing? Ben Arnold

I Do At 92
10pm, Channel 4

It’s testament to the arrogance of youth that it’s often assumed that the desire to make the ultimate commitment dwindles with the advancing of years. This follows the prenuptial preparations of couples who intend to tie the knot well into retirement; heart-rending memories of bereavement or unhappy former marriages give way to the life-affirming truth that love can strike just as fiercely at 19 or 90. Only hearts made of ice and granite will be unmoved. Luke Holland

Amazing Spaces: WWII Special
8pm, Channel 4

It’s hard to imagine anyone getting too excited about the humble, rain-lashed British caravan. For a prisoner in a Japanese camp during the second world war, however, such a vehicle may have seemed a beacon of hope. Tonight, the ebullient George Clarke and creative fabricator Will Hardie visit Jan Fursier to bring to life the technical caravan drawings that she recently discovered in her father’s wartime diaries. John Robinson

Nazi Weird War Two
8pm, National Geographic

The first in a new doc series explores a lesser-known but still horrifying episode of the second world war. In 1945, a six-week battle for control of Ramree Island in Burma culminated in the Japanese army beating a hasty retreat. Desperate to reach the mainland, 1,000 men crossed crocodile-infested waters, with predictably grim consequences. Historian Sam Willis and self-styled urban explorer Robert Joe ponder their gruesome fate. Phil Harrison

This Is Us
9pm, Channel 4

Kevin faces the fallout of his spectacular on-camera meltdown, finding that rather than being able to walk away from his lowest common denominator sitcom, he’s now facing either career suicide or having to make a humiliating apology. Over at Randall’s house, Beth is suspicious of her new father-in-law and his daily disappearances, while – back in the past – Jack is struggling with his love of booze. Occasional moments of wit can’t cut through this volume of cloying saccharin. BA

The Reckless Moment, (Max Ophüls, 1949), 11.30am, More4

A knotty little tale of murder and blackmail. Joan Bennett is a good wife and mother; so good that she helps daughter Geraldine Brooks conceal the killing of her lover. James Mason is smooth and threatening, first demanding money with menaces, then falling heavily for mum. In Ophüls’s hands, it’s almost plausible. Paul Howlett
