Travellers move on from Splashworld as Southport leisure centre set to fully reopen

Travellers who set up an illegal camp at a popular leisure centre have now vacated the area.

The car park and main swimming pools at Splashworld in Southport had to be closed to the public, after a convoy of caravans parked up this weekend.

Merseyside Police were called to the area by local residents who alleged there were incidents of anti-social and threatening behaviour.

It is understood officers worked with the council to remove the illegal camp.

Today, the council says it is 'delighted' to announce the travellers have left the site.

A Sefton Council spokesman said: "We can confirm that travellers have vacated the car park at Splashworld, Southport.

"Following a cleansing inspection and final health and safety checks, all main facilities have now resumed and the centre is once again fully open to the public.

"We would like to thank Merseyside Police for their support during this brief incident and we apologise for any disruption this may have caused."

Figures obtained from a Freedom Of Information request last year showed travellers set up camp more than once a month in Sefton - with taxpayers paying for the clean up operations afterwards.
