Ahead of the UK Budget next week the SNP’s Alison Thewliss has demanded chancellor Rishi Sunak ditch damaging plans for a return to Tory austerity cuts and instead lay the foundations for an investment-led recovery.
In a comment piece for the Daily Record the SNP’s Treasury spokeswoman said the budget must focus on protecting people’s jobs and boosting household incomes.
The UK suffered a record slump in 2020, with GDP falling by 9.9 per cent and redundancies are at a record high
UK unemployment has risen to 5.1 per cent and there are 726,000 fewer people in work than this time last year.
Thewliss argued that if the UK is to avoid a protracted downturn,it is essential to invest to kickstart the recovery with a £98 billion fiscal stimulus.
