Three arrested after immigration raid at Taj Brasserie

Three men have been arrested by immigration officers after a raid at an Indian restaurant in Winterbourne.

A spokesperson for the Home Office said the authority was acting on intelligence when they searched Taj Brasserie, on the High Street.

Three Bangladeshi men aged 39, 44, and 49, were arrested after checks proved they had overstayed their visas.

They have now been detained pending removal from the UK.

A fourth Bangladeshi man, aged 46, was also encountered and checks showed he too had overstayed his visa. He was placed on immigration bail while his case is progressed.

Bosses of the eatery now face fines of up to £80,000.

How to report an immigration crime

A spokesperson for the Home Office said: "Taj Brasserie was served a civil penalty referral notice warning that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker will be imposed unless the employer can demonstrate that appropriate right-to-work document checks were carried out, such as seeing a passport or Home Office document confirming permission to work.

"This is a potential total of up to £80,000."

Information to help employers carry out checks to prevent illegal working can be found here.
