This is why armed police were called out to Pill, Newport last night

Armed police were called out to a house in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport last night following reports that a man was carrying a firearm.

The armed response officers, equipped with vests and shields, were called out at around 7.40pm on Thursday, July 11.

Bystander Vill Tatar, 19, saw the police arriving at the scene where he watched "about 10 officers" approach the property.

He said: "They opened the front door and started talking to the guy, then I was told to leave the area."

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "We received reports that a man was in possession of a possible firearm in the area of South Market Street, Newport.

"Officers attended an address in the street, conducted a search and recovered an air rifle."

This is what it's like to police Newport:

"A 40-year-old local man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of firearms offences, when he attended Newport Central Police Station.

"He remains in custody at this time."
