The permutations for the final weekend of the Leinster and Munster championships

Of the eight teams in action in the final round of games in the Leinster and Munster Championships, there’s something at stake for all of them this weekend.

It’s stretching things a bit to make that claim about Tipperary, who are virtually assured of a spot in the Munster final given the 25-point scoring difference advantage they hold over Cork.

Leinster is more delicately poised, with the top four teams all in the running for Leinster final spots, while any of them could also find themselves out of the Championship come Saturday evening.

Saturday: Dublin v Galway, Wexford v Kilkenny.

If Dublin beat Galway, they will qualify for the Leinster final unless Wexford-Kilkenny ends in a draw. In that case, all four teams would be level on five points and would be separated by scoring difference.

If Galway avoid defeat they’ll be in the Leinster final. A draw would see Dublin requiring Kilkenny to inflict a heavy defeat on Wexford for Mattie Kenny’s side to finish in the top three.

If Galway win, both Kilkenny and Wexford stay in the Championship. In terms of reaching the Leinster final, a draw would suit Kilkenny as they currently enjoy a better scoring difference than Wexford, who must win to leapfrog them.

MUNSTER

Sunday: Tipperary v Limerick, Clare v Cork.

For Tipperary not to reach the Munster final, they’d have to lose to Limerick and Cork would need to beat Clare, with the combined margins from both games combined exceeding 25 points. So Tipp look safe enough.

Only a 62-point swing between Limerick losing to Tipperary and Clare beating Cork would deny the All-Ireland champions a top three spot, while if they beat Tipp they’ll be in the Munster final, almost certainly against the Premier.

To survive in the Championship, Clare must beat Cork and hope that Limerick don’t lose to Tipperary in order to eliminate the Rebels.

To reach the Munster final, Cork need to better Limerick’s result but if they both win, they’ll most likely miss out on scoring difference and will instead contest a preliminary quarter-final.
