The Greatest Dancer: How does it work? Everything you need to know about Cheryl's new show

A brand new dance competition is about to hit screens and it’s all about people power.

The Greatest Dancer sees talented hopefuls try out in a Birmingham dance studio, hoping to win over the audience and meet the Dance Captains.

Cheryl makes her defiant return to the small screen, back on a panel, while Oti Mabuse swaps the Strictly dance floor for a seat in the audience. They are joined by Glee star Matthew Morrison.

Presented by Alesha Dixon and Jordan Banjo, here is everything you need to know about The Greatest Dancer…

What is The Greatest Dancer and how does it work?

The new competition, which is the first programme Simon Cowell’s Syco have produced with the BBC, sees dancers of all ages, from all over the country and all walks of life compete on stage for the chance to make it through to the next round.

But, in a massive talent show twist, the power is in the hands of the audience. Each audience member has a button to press when they like what they see on stage. If the dance act gets 75% of the vote, the screen opens to reveal them to the room – and, more importantly, the trio of Dance Captains.

Top trio: Oti Mabuse, Matthew Morrison and Cheryl (BBC/Syco/Thames/Tom Dymond)

In later rounds, after the four audition weeks, Cheryl, Mabuse and Morrison will each pick three acts to mentor through the live shows. In week eight, one act will be crowned champion.

The interactive idea – which is an adaptation of a format used in singing show Rising Star – means that the captains are occasionally frustrated when an act doesn’t get through despite bundles of talent. But the trio must sit on their hands for the first month, although they do get to talk to acts if they are successful.

What do they win?

The winning act will get the chance to perform on Strictly Come Dancing next year, as one of the special guest performances. They will also walk away with £50,000.

When is it on?

The Greatest Dancer starts tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
