The funny reason why Pochettino told his Spurs assistant manager Jesus Perez off this week

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino gave his assistant manager Jesus Perez a light-hearted telling off this week for playing down their relationship.

The Spaniard has been by Pochettino's side for almost nine years at Espanyol, Southampton and then Spurs and the two are inseperable.

Not only do the duo spend up to 12 hours a day together most days at Hotspur Way, the club's training complex in Enfield, they share their commute to work together, for Perez and his family live just a minute away from the Pochettinos.

As Pochettino approaches his 500th game in management with the visit of Newcastle to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he was asked whether he and Perez were sick of each other yet.

Perez shook his head and Pochettino added: "No, because he started late! One year and a half [late]. I think we are in a good place."

However, when his assistant manager joked that he has to say no because 'he's my boss', Pochettino looked hurt.

"That is the wrong answer!" he retorted. "I am not your boss. I am your friend, your colleague."

Perez explained that "here I cannot say that" in front of the media. Pochettino thought for a moment and then said: "Okay, I am your leader". That brought plenty of laughter from the pair of them.

The 47-year-old Spurs boss feels fortunate that he's already reached 500 matches in management.

"I feel a very lucky man that in 10 years I've had the possibility to manage 500 games. It means nearly 50 official games a year and that means that I didn't have holidays!" he joked.

"I feel very happy, very proud. I know that this business is very difficult, to be consistent in a long period. We are better now [than when they were young coaches] after more than 10 years working.

"I remember always my first game against Barcelona in Montjuic, the Copa del Rey. I remember always the panic in my face, the nerves, I was already nervous."

Pochettino revealed that there was one big moment in his first week that caused him the most stress as a new manager.

"I remember always the first team sheet after the training session. I think I spent half an hour, checking, controlling, everything, but now it's so easy," he said.

"That was a massive stress ten years ago but now it's easy. Now it's part of the life of football and your experience, how you are going to manage the situation.

"People that are not happy not to be in the squad, it's easy now to manage. Before, it was like, only 18 but I have 25. What am I going to do with the other seven? I was very worried. Now it's easy to manage or to handle these type of situations."

Pochettino, Perez and the Spurs fans will be hoping the manager marks his milestone with a fitting victory against Sunday's visitors.
