Tesco and Co-op shut early so staff can watch Euro 2020 England final

Tesco and The Co-op supermarkets have both said they will close early this Sunday so staff can watch the Euros final.

England clash with Italy this weekend and the shops have said it is the biggest game in 55 years for football fans.

Tesco revealed the news on social media, they said: "Every fan helps.

"This is big. The biggest game in 55 years.

"That's why all of our stores will be closed across England for the match, so our incredible colleagues can watch it too.

"It's the least they deserve after all their hard work.

"And come kick-off, England deserve every little bit of support."

People applauded the decision with many commenting on the post, one said: "Well done Tesco! All companies should treat their employees as people not profit! Love this."

Another added: "Well done Tesco your staff have worked extremely hard through this pandemic.. I know this will mean a lot to the staff in express stores."

And The Co-op said: "It's not just football coming home, our colleagues are going home!

"All our stores in England are closing at 7.45pm on Sunday #ItsComingHome."

People congratulated them on the move, one said: "I think this is a fantastic idea, the staff at my local Co-op are lovely and deserve to watch the game with their families."

Another added: "Thank you Co-op!! My local Co-op staff truly deserve it. They’ve worked hard through the pandemic and always been there waiting with a smile and helping hand!

"Massive thank you to Co-op on behalf of customers!"

An expectant nation is set to spend millions of pounds today readying itself for Sunday's showdown with Italy at Wembley for the chance to be crowned champions of Europe.

Supermarkets are preparing for a sales bonanza as Britons get set for the biggest football match since 1966, for which there is likely to be a record TV audience.
