A man was left fighting for life after falling “from height” in a residential street near Belmarsh prison.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, was found in Whinchat Road, Thamesmead in the early hours of Friday morning.

Scotland Yard said they were called to the scene at around 12.30am and attended with the London Ambulance Service.

The man was taken to hospital and remains there in a critical condition.

His next of kin have been informed.

A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the investigation. He remains in custody.

The Metropolitan Police said inquiries into how the man came to be injured are ongoing and detectives from the CID based at South East Command Unit are investigating.
