Severe flu outbreak leads to West Ham vs Everton match in WSL to be postponed

West Ham have been forced to postpone their Women's Super League fixture this weekend after an outbreak of flu.

The Hammers were due to host Everton but concerns over the welfare of players has led to the match being called off.

The decision to postpone the fixture, which was due to take place at 2pm on Sunday, comes in accordance with Women's Super League rules.

West Ham have apologised to their supporters for any inconvenience caused by the decision.

A statement from the club said: "The Club’s Barclays FA Women's Super League match with Everton on Sunday has been postponed due to a significant outbreak of a flu virus within Matt Beard's squad.

"West Ham United would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to its supporters. Details on the rearrangement of the date and time of the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

An FA Spokesperson added: “Player welfare is of paramount importance and the decision has been made to postpone the match in accordance with Barclays FA Women’s Super League Rule 11.3.8.”

Supporters who have tickets for the fixture can either claim a refund from the club, or use the ticket for the rearranged game.

A new time and date for the rearranged game are yet to be confirmed.

West Ham find themselves eighth in the WSL table, seven points off the bottom two. They have not been in action since their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on December 8.

Everton have had a better time of it in the league, sitting in fifth place with five wins from their nine matches so far this campaign.
