Scarecrows popping up all over Erskine as people enjoy community competition

Scarecrows are popping up in gardens across Erskine as residents make the most of a fun competition organised by a community garden project.

With Halloween set to be a damp squib this year, volunteers at Erskine Community Garden wanted to help residents enjoy the festivities despite traditional methods being off the cards.

They came up with the idea to host a scarecrow competition, and have been encouraging locals to get creative with the chance of winning a selection of treats from Chocolate Box in Paisley.

The competition officially starts today, but organisers have already been left impressed by some of the entries which have begun popping up around the village.

Heather Clissett, one of the volunteers at Erskine Community Garden, said they are enjoying all the entries so far.

She said: “We weren’t sure what kind of response we would get as it is quite a bit of work to build a scarecrow, but the response so far has been great.

“It officially starts on the 20th but we have had people sending us pictures to show off their creations already.

“We just thought it would be nice to have something that people could look out for this Halloween given that trick or treating isn’t likely to go ahead.”

The scarecrows are not the only thing would-be trick or treaters can spot while out and about in Erskine on Halloween.

Erskine Community Garden has also urged people to carve pumpkins or create pumpkin paintings for people to have fun spotting.

Heather added: “We just wanted to help families have a bit of fun this year while they aren’t able to do the things they normally would.

“We hope people will enjoy taking part and seeing what others create.”

To take part in the scarecrow competition, take a picture of your scarecrow and post it on the Erskine Community Garden Facebook page.

Heather and the other volunteers will then create a special online photo album on their Facebook page and the scarecrow with the most likes will be picked as the winner after October 31.
