Report: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to miss 3 weeks pending MRI results

We’re still waiting to hear about the MRI results for Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes but there was more optimism in the early morning hours on Friday.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mahomes is expected to be out for the next three weeks at a minimum. That, of course, is if knee ligaments withstood the patella dislocation injury, which the MRI results will reveal shortly.

Obviously, this would be the best-case scenario for the Chiefs and their star QB. The worst-case scenario would be season-ending knee surgery and a trip to injured reserve for Mahomes.

If Mahomes were to return in three weeks, he’d miss two straight home games against the Packers and Vikings, as well as a road game against the Titans in Week 10. He very well could return against the Chargers in their Mexico City showdown in Week 11. That’d be ideal because he’d have the bye week to rest just after.

The best thing about this timeline is that the Chiefs only face one AFC conference team during that span. If they can just manage to get a win against the Titans and perhaps steal another game in the process, they’ll be in good shape to still make a postseason run.

The most important thing, however, is that the Chiefs get back a healthy Patrick Mahomes. The last thing you want to do is rush him back from this type of injury and potentially put his career on the line. If there are any accompanying risks like that related to an early return, the Chiefs should be smart and shut him down for the remainder of the season.
