'Red Devils' at forefront of international tug-of-war for Leeds United's Pascal Struijk

Pascal Struijk has been something of an unsung hero amidst Leeds United's return to the Premier League this season.

The tall, gentle, uncomplaining Dutchman has been accosted into an unfamiliar defensive midfield role on occasion, directly compared to Kalvin Phillips in the Englishman's absence.

Struijk has also performed, much more confidently it must be said, as a back-up central defender throughout the campaign. His most recent outing was Leeds' 3-1 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

While Raphinha has dazzled on the right with Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford stormed to double figures in the goalscoring standings and Phillips earned international acclaim, Struijk has simply gone about his business.

Was Raphinha a bargain according to Bielsa?

It appears though that while Struijk has flown under the radar for much of the season, he has not evaded the admiring glances of former Everton and Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez.

The softly-spoken Spaniard is currently in charge of the star-studded Belgian national team, a post he has held since 2016. Known as the 'Red Devils', Belgium are in the process of trying to persuade former AFC Ajax academy graduate Struijk to switch international allegiances to the country of his birth, according to De Telegraaf.

Struijk was born in Deurne, a district within the Belgian city of Antwerp, close to the Dutch border. The 21-year-old has previously appeared for the Netherlands at youth international level, but also qualifies for Indonesia through his paternal grandparents who originate from what was once known as the Dutch East Indies.

It may prove to be a shrewd move by Martinez whose current first-choice left-footed central defender is 33-year-old Jan Vertonghen.

One would imagine the former Spurs man will retire from international football soon, meaning Martinez will be left with one-cap RSC Anderlecht man Hannes Delcroix as his solitary left-footed centre-back.

Struijk could offer that balance at the heart of Martinez's defence amidst a sea of right-footers. With a European Championships fast approaching, Struijk could even earn a late call-up if Diego Llorente's injury worries continue to plague him, allowing a consistent run of Premier League football for the 21-year-old.

Still allied with the Netherlands, Struijk is yet to make a decision. But, given the likes of Nathan Ake, Sven Botman and Virgil van Dijk ahead of him in the pecking order for Holland, his best chance of international football may come with the country of his birth.
