Pregnant nurse's tearful plea through oxygen mask as she fights coronavirus

A pregnant nurse who is being treated for coronavirus has issued a tearful plea about social distancing.

Speaking on camera through a mask at her hospital bed, Michelle Wright, 37, has urged Brits to stay inside to protect lives.

Michelle, who is 29 weeks pregnant, was being treated on a high dependency ward on Friday, April 3 when she filmed the video, BirminghamLive reports.

While struggling to breathe, the City Hospital nurse spoke to say she had been given steroid injections to help her unborn baby's lungs amid fears they may 'deteriorate', prompting a premature birth.

Through exasperated breaths, she said: "This virus is very unpredictable, I struggle too much to breathe on my own.

"I hope this is temporary and I just pray things start to improve, I've not got any worse in the last 24 hours but this virus does not discriminate."

Michelle, who was being treated at Russell Hall Hospital, Dudley, added: "So I'm not going to talk for long, but what I wanted to say was please, please listen to Government advice, social distancing, keep yourself and your families as safe as possible. If you can stay in and save lives.

"We have to all do what we can to keep ourselves safe and keep the NHS able to cope."

Thankfully, her breathing is said to have improved over the weekend.

Speaking to the BBC on Tuesday, her sister Donna said: "Her breathing is definitely better, which is really encouraging.

"She is still in high dependency and is being really well looked after. Despite Michelle struggling to breathe the baby is, all the signs are really positive that everything is fine, so that's brilliant.

"She felt that perhaps younger people weren't taking it as seriously."

Her family said they were unsure where she contracted the virus.
