Police access phone of stabbing accused who shut down Sydney CBD

Mert Nay (L) is accused of murdering Michaela Dunn.

Police are accessing the phone of a man accused of stabbing to death a woman in Sydney's CBD in August and need more time to prepare the case against him, a court has heard.

Mert Ney appeared via audio visual link on Tuesday in Sydney's Central Local Court, which was told the brief of evidence against him comprised some 7,000 pages.

The court heard police accessed the 21-year-old's phone last week.

The prosecution asked for more time to consider the material on Mr Ney's phone.

Mr Ney's charges include murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is accused of killing Michaela Dunn, 24, with a kitchen knife and stabbing Lin Bo, 41, during an alleged attack that sent the CBD into lockdown.

The court heard the case has so far involved subpoenas to Uber, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and four medical centres.

The alleged attack triggered an enormous police response as Mr Ney was filmed roaming the streets appearing to hold a bloodied knife.

He was restrained by members of the public who used a chair and milk crate to hold him until police arrived.

Police allege the 21-year-old visited Ms Dunn prior to his allege attack for a sex work appointment.

The court has previously heard his problems in custody have included insomnia and he required medication for pain and mental illness.

The matter returns to court in February.
