Plans submitted for new 250-bed hotel in city centre

Plans could be submitted for a 250-bed hotel on land next to St Columba’s Church in the centre of Glasgow.

Artisan Blythswood Quarter Ltd is planning an application for a mixed development at the junction of St Vincent Street and Pitt Street.

If approved, it would allow the site to be used for retail, food and drink, business, hotel, houses or flats.

However, the developer’s agent has revealed the application would likely relate to a hotel, with around 200 to 250 beds. It would be built beside the category B-listed church.

No application has been submitted but a request for an Environmental Impact Assessment screening opinion, from Glasgow City Council, was launched on behalf of the applicant.

The authority ruled the assessment was not required.

“The site currently comprises an office block located on the junction of St Vincent Street and Pitt Street,” the agent stated in a letter to the council.

“It is anticipated the application will seek planning permission to erect a circa 200-250 bed hotel across a family of buildings.

“Initial proposals include buildings ranging in height, albeit design matters continue to be the subject of pre-application discussions.

“This development provides an opportunity to demolish an office building which is detracting from the townscape.

“The design of the new building will emerge following considerable heritage and townscape analysis.”

A proposal of application notice was submitted to the council in August and a public meeting was scheduled for October 9 in St Columba’s Church.
