Northern criticised after insensitive sign appears during Leeds station chaos

Passengers have criticised Northern after an insensitive sign was plastered over a ticket machine during the chaos at Leeds station.

People at stations across the Northern network were at the busy station for around four hours on Thursday, May 30, while British Transport Police rescued a man who was in a precarious position.

The man was brought to safety and detained under the Mental Health Act.

Passengers travelling from Bradford Foster Square have hit out at Northern, after they spotted a handwritten sign on a ticket machine which reads: "No trains due to potential suicide".

People on Twitter have described the sign as 'completely unacceptable' and 'absolutely appalling'.

Responding to the criticism, a Northern spokesman said: "Thank you for bringing this to our attention and I sincerely apologise for this.

"I will have this reported to be investigated by the team as this is not an official Northern notice and should not have been posted."

Other passengers, who got caught up in the chaos, have also raised concerns about a lack of sensitivity.

Commuter Greg Marcus, who was stuck on a train outside Leeds station for two hours, said: "What I got from the journey is how more needs to be done for people to understand mental health.

"All people could talk about was 'I am going to be late for work and have to make this time up', 'I am not going to get my morning coffee on the way to work now', rather than trying to focus on the fact that someone has been struggling."

He added: "From someone who has had to seek help myself in the past and I know how hard that was to do, it saddens me to think that people are more bothered about making a bit of time up or grabbing a coffee than the wellbeing of someone else."
