Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today - when and where to watch

Nicola Sturgeon is to deliver a Covid-19 update to the Scottish Parliament today.

The First Minister will deliver her statement to MSPs at Holyrood this afternoon.

It comes as yesterday's figures confirmed 3,894 new cases of coronavirus in Scotland, making up 12.8% of all tests.

No new deaths were reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, 43 people were in intensive care with covid, with 591 people in hospital receiving treatment for the virus.

Cases of the new Omicron variant also continue to rise. In Paisley, Todholm Primary has closed due to a number of covid cases believed to be linked to the variant.

What is the FM expected to discuss?

The First Minister will provide an update on the latest coronavirus statistics, including the number of new cases linked to covid, as well as deaths and hospital admissions.

Ms Sturgeon is also expected to discuss the latest information on the new Omicron variant.

Deputy chief medical officer for England Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said scientists around the world agree that the Omicron variant is "of increased concern".

He said there are still uncertainties about how transmissible the variant is and its impact on severity of disease and that the "number of mutations present, already on first principle, makes us worry about a possible effect on vaccine effectiveness".

What time will the briefing be held?

The update will take place some time after 2pm, and is expected to begin at around 2.30pm.

Where can I watch the update?

The briefing will be broadcast live on the Scottish Government Twitter page as well the BBC One Scotland channel and BBC Scotland iPlayer.
