Niclas Eliasson 'interests' Celtic as race hots up for Bristol City winger

Celtic are interested in Bristol City winger Niclas Eliasson, according to a report.

Italian website Cittaceleste is suggesting that the Hoops have joined Villarreal and Lazio in chasing the star, although the Rome club are more likely to be looking for a deal at the end of the season.

The Swedish under-21 attacker is out of contract at the end of the year and has been in brilliant form with three goals and 10 assists in 24 league games.

He can play on either side but is known for cutting on to his left foot from positions on the right.

The 24-year-old, who holds Brazilian citizenship, moved to Bristol in August 2017 for a fee of around £1.8m and while his deal comes to to an end in the summer, the Robins have the option of an added year extension.

Current boss Lee Johnson is desperate to get the star to sign a new deal.

He said: "The way I would see it is he has 18 months on his contract but we would absolutely love it for him to sign a new contract. We value him hugely.

"We're discussing, he's changed agents, but we've been sitting down and talking about it since the start of the summer but then agents change, other priorities come in between that. But the simple stance is we'd love him to stay longer.

"In any negotiations it takes time but currently he has 18 months on his contract and we'd love to see it extended."

Bristol sit in ninth place in the English second tier but are only two points off a play-off berth and are unlikely to part with one of their key creative players in January without a handsome fee.

Neil Lennon is thought to be tracking a winger as he looks to improve his squad to cope with a sustained title challenge from their Glasgow rivals Rangers.

Celtic have already spent around £5.5m in the window to date after clinching Patryk Klimala and Ismaila Soro.
