NI Coronavirus: Ten further deaths and 679 new cases reported by DoH

The Department of Health has today reported a further 10 coronavirus related deaths.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 740, according to the DoH.

Wednesday's dashboard update reports a further 679 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 40,858 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 4,498 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 418 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 50 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, a top doctor has called on Stormont ministers to lock Northern Ireland down.

NI’s British Medical Association chair, Dr Tom Black, said measures introduced over two weeks ago were “too little too late”.

And he added that any notion of bringing back hospitality is “just not what we should doing right now”.

Dr Black told Belfast Live: “I think the Executive needs to go to a full lockdown, the same as what Boris Johnson is doing in London and the same as what the Republic of Ireland is doing.

“Close non essential retail, keep hospitality closed, close places of worship - that’s what we need to do."
