MSU Spring Game Takeaways: Brian Lewerke looks healthy, confident

In Michigan State’s annual spring game, all eyes were on Senior quarterback Brian Lewerke. Lewerke suffered through a shoulder injury last year, and it made him largely ineffective on the year, even getting him benched for underclassmen Rocky Lombardi a few times over the course of the season.

When asked how he thought the day went, Lewerke’s thoughts went immediately to his formerly injured shoulder:

“I think today went really well. My arm felt great,” Lewerke said. “I was focusing on my footwork and my form. Didn’t feel any pain whatsoever throwing. I think it’s still a work in progress, but I think I can even hopefully be better than where I was two years ago. I made a lot of mistakes. So still a work in progress, but I’m getting very close to that.”

While the defense ultimately defeated the offense 42-26, Lewerke was a bright spot on the day.

It is extremely refreshing for Lewerke attempting and completing throws like this. His injury last season not only prevented him from making throws like this, he stopped even trying to throw them, which really hurt Michigan State’s team. While MSU has always been known for their running games, they have also always relied on strong-armed quarterbacks like Connor Cook and Kirk Cousins to help keep defenses honest.

Lewerke, who was even considered a fringe Heisman candidate at the start of last season, could shock the Big Ten if he is 100% this season.
