Services travelling between Bury and Whitefield were cancelled for several hours following the acts of vandalism.

One person travelling on one of the trams when it was targeted said: "I didn't see what it was just heard the bang as the tram was moving.

"The driver came to check the window at the Radcliffe station. The whole window was cracked but luckily hadn't come through.

"People looked shocked and moved out the way quickly. Don't know why someone would do that. Thank god it wasn't the drivers window that got hit."

Shortly before 8pm on Tuesday, a Metrolink spokesperson tweeted: "Due to acts of vandalism, three trams have been subjected to smashed windows in the Radcliffe bank area.

"Due to this and for the safety of our passengers, there are no services operating between Bury and Whitefield until further notice."

Services began running again shortly before 10pm.

In a statement, TfGM Metrolink service delivery manager Victoria Mercer, said: “It’s sad to see acts of mindless vandalism targeting our services, especially at am time when we are working really hard to keep people moving.

"This reckless incident not only threatened the safety and wellbeing of those on board, it caused inconvenience to customers on the Bury line for several hours and will cost a significant amount of public money to repair the damage.

“We are reviewing CCTV footage and working closely with Greater Manchester Police to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, and I would like to reassure people in the area that we are working with local police and youth engagement teams to tackle incidents of antisocial behaviour.”
