Master sand sculptor brings his unique artwork to Hunter beaches

A MASTER sculptor will bring his work to the Hunter this weekend, but don't expect it to last long.

Dennis Massoud has earned acclaim for his elaborate sand structures that put the common sandcastle to shame.

He will wield the sands at Blacksmiths on Saturday as part of a Lake Macquarie City Council program in its fifth year where he will teach some of his tricks and judge competitions.

The former busker's creations have carried him around the world, including to a world championship in Denmark.

"There are some techniques that have taken me years to develop, but it only takes 10 minutes to impart the information to workshop participants," Massoud said.

"In a matter of minutes people can create structures in sand they once thought were impossible."

Registrations for the 9am Saturday workshop open at 8.30am near the surf club. The sculpture competition will run from 9.30am to 11am. The event will also feature a kite-flying demonstration from 10am.
