Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo equals Champions League record

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has now made the joint all-time highest number of appearances in the Champions League.

Ronaldo, 36, sealed a sensational return to United on deadline day and wasted no time to announce his arrival in spectacular fashion on the pitch when scoring twice against Newcastle in the Reds' 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon in his second debut for the club.

The impact of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's return was felt immediately and he started again for United on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer entrusted Ronaldo to lead United's attack against BSC Young Boys, but the Portuguese star's place in the starting XI actually had greater importance because it meant Ronaldo equalled the all-time record for appearances in the Champions League.

Ronaldo is making his 177th Champions League appearance against BSC Young Boys, which means he's now equalled former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas' record of 177 appearances in Europe's premium, elite competition.

If equalling that record wasn't enough, Ronaldo also scored within 15 minutes of that Champions League clash in Switzerland.

United play Villarreal in the Champions League next and Ronaldo can surpass Casillas' record if making an appearance in that game.
