Man 'using his daily exercise to cycle on the motorway' causes two cars to crash

A cyclist has been fined after 'taking his daily exercise in lane one of the M58' and causing a crash.

Lancashire Road Police said that the man was cycling along the hard shoulder, near Orrell, but moved out into lane one, causing a car behind him to swerve into lane two, into the path of a van.

The van then swerved to the left as there was another vehicle in lane three, narrowly missing the cyclist but crashing with the car.

Officers confirmed that the cyclist was not injured in the incident and was not under the influence of drink or drugs.

A spokesman for Lancashire Road Police shared a photo of the cyclist from behind and tweeted: "T1TacOps are now off for a few days. It's been a busy set of shifts for us but one surreal incident this week has been this chap.

"He had been taking his daily exercise in Lane 1 of the M58 causing 2 cars to crash around him & some how avoided being wiped out himself. Stay safe."

In a later tweet, responding to someone who asked if the cyclist was drunk, the spokesman continued: "Not impaired or intoxicated and was escorted off the motorway with a fine in his pocket and a huge lesson in road safety."
