Man attacked baby and left tot permanently disabled 'because he pulled his beard'

A man launched a sickening attack on a three-month-old baby and left him permanently disabled, all because he pulled his beard.

Daniel Plumb has been jailed for 13 years for his twisted attack on a defenceless baby.

The 35-year-old threw the baby against a sofa so hard he bounced off the back.

He went onto yank his legs and hit him around the heat and later told police he lost his temper when the innocent tot pulled on his beard.

Plumb said: “I got very, very angry, very, very fast,” the Manchester Evening News reported.

However, he then realised the boy wasn’t breathing and said he panicked and started to shake him to try and get a response.

He claimed he pinched the child at "pressure points" on his hands and feet and legs to try and get a reaction.

Then, instead of calling an ambulance, Burnley Crown Court heard how he spent 40 minutes on Google, searching up terms like “three month old seems comatose” and “three month old twitching”.

Barbara Webster, prosecuting, said when the infant was admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit the following day he had fractures to his skull, bleeding to his brain, bruises to his face and body and “too many retinal haemorrhages to count.”

The baby now has cerebral palsy which will leave him with cognitive and mobility difficulties for the rest of his life.

Plumb, from Burnley, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He admitted to officers that the injuries were all his fault.

Plumb also confessed to kicking the child so hard when it was in its baby bouncer that it was catapulted forward and only prevented from hitting the ground because it was strapped into its chair.

Following that incident he said he heard the baby screaming and hid in a bathroom.

Despite all this, Plumb claimed he was not a violent person but pled guilty to two counts of GBH.

Isobel Thomas, defending, said Plumb was fully prepared to take any punishment for what he had done to the child.

She said: “Not a day goes by that he doesn’t hate himself for what happened.”

Judge Sara Dodd, sentencing, said: "The injuries sustained by the child are life changing, including the fact he now has a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

“Photos I have been shown today show a happy, lively little boy but the reality is that his mobility and cognitive function remain reduced as a result of the injuries inflicted by you.

“You pose an ongoing very high risk to any child in your care unless the root cause of your current offence is identified. Your inexplicable conduct means you are to be regarded as dangerous.”

In addition to the 13 year jail term, Judge Dodd handed down a five year extended licence period to protect the public and children from Plumb.
