Loss of Cheltenham winner Mohaayed and Ardlethen "simply devastating" says Dan Skelton

Dan Skelton has described the loss of high-achieving horses Mohaayed and Ardlethen as "simply devastating" for his yard.

The pair were competing in races on Saturday when they sadly suffered injuries and had to be put down.

Mohaayed, a shock 33-1 winner at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, unseated jockey Bridget Andrews in Market Rasen's MansionBet's Bet 10 Get 20 Hurdle.

Before the incident at the fifth obstacle, the eight-year-old had been settled just behind the leaders.

Rated 153 at his peak, Mohaayed won nearly £225,000 in his 37-race career, which included the County Hurdle first prize at Prestbury Park.

Andrews, his regular rider, had her husband-to-be Harry Skelton back in fifth when they teamed up to defeat 23 rivals.

At Warwick, Ardlethen was brought down with the Philip Hobbs-trained Espion at the final flight in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle.

Vets treated both horses for some time after the 3m 1f contest, however there was a sad outcome to end of the card as both could not be saved.

Ardlethen was rated 137 and raced at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival after finishing runner-up in the Grade 2 William Hill Towton Novices' Chase at Wetherby.

Skelton tweeted: "There are no words to describe how much of a difficult day it has been.

"To lose both Ardlethen & Mohaayed is simply devastating and the team is shattered; thinking especially of their owners Mike & Eileen Newbould and Tim & June Watts.

"Thank you boys for the memories."

Racing fans also paid tribute on social media.

One said: "It really hits home when this happens and I can't begin to imagine the feeling of those that looked after these fine animals.

"Thoughts with all at both the Skelton and Hobbs yards."

Another added: "Terrible news losing Espion, Ardlethen and Mohaayed today, not the news anyone wanted.

"My sincerest condolences go out to Dan Skelton, Philip Hobbs and everyone involved."
