Liverpool given huge boost ahead of Champions League clash with Porto

Liverpool’s hopes of advancing to the Champions League semi-finals were boosted on Saturday after Porto star Alex Telles picked up an injury for the Portuguese giants.

The Reds and their European rivals go head-to-head in the last-eight of Europe’s elite club competition next month, with the first leg taking place at Anfield on April 9.

Porto prepared for that clash with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Braga on Saturday, but the triumph was overshadowed by the knock picked up by their left-back.

The 26-year-old has earned a reputation as a reliable penalty-taker, and it was his extra-time spot-kick against Roma that booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Brazilian Telles notched up another penalty against Braga, bagging his side’s second goal, but paid for his efforts by appearing to hurt himself.

After striking the ball, Telles went down holding his right hip and was immediately substituted.

It remains to be seen if it’s a serious injury but with just nine days until Porto travel to Liverpool , his team will be hoping it’s a speedy recovery.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, however, will not be focused on the Champions League encounter just yet - with his side hosting Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

And Klopp has virtually a fully-fit squad to choose from as he looks to secure a victory that would see his team move back above Manchester City into top spot.

Long-term absentees Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have returned to full training with the squad but neither is ready for a match day yet.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri have also resumed training after recovering from injuries which forced them to withdraw from international duty with England and Switzerland.
