Liverpool explain why players wore 'Man United style' kit against Bologna

Liverpool have revealed why Jurgen Klopp's men were forced to wear a mash-up of kits in Thursday's clashes against Bologna.

The Reds overcame the Italian side in the first of their two fixtures, with Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota finding the net in a 2-0 victory.

And Klopp's men were forced to don this seasons home top, with the black away shorts and socks, to the confusion of many fans online.

It's fair to say the kit didn't go down too well on social media, with many fans claiming to be reminded of Liverpool's rivals Manchester United.

@Callum__Moran said "Liverpool look like United with this kit clash."

@JohnAtela added: "What is this Liverpool kit?"

@mattladson said: "Liverpool have gone full Man United with this absolutely bizarre kit combo. And the white socks match the opposition's. Weird."

However, the Reds have cleared up any confusion behind the unique strip, claiming that the players were required to wear it in order to avoid the stone coloured away shirt clashing with the white tops of the Serie A side, as the officials deemed the colours to be rather similar.

The club said in their match updates: "The reason Liverpool are sporting the unusual combination of the red home jerseys and away shorts and socks is due to an unexpected clash of kits, with match officials deeming the stone shirt too indistinguishable from Bologna's white tops.

"Logistics meant the team were unable to change into full home strip ahead of the games."

At the time of writing, Liverpool were winning the second game against Bologna 1-0 after a strike from Takumi Minamino.
