Another day, another Leonardo DiCaprio meme. Over the weekend, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor was photographed in Malibu playing volleyball.
Sadly, DiCaprio didn't seem to be having a lot of fun in the sun as pictures of him being smacked in the face by a ball have surfaced - swiftly becoming a viral Internet meme.
In photos shared by Page Six, DiCaprio was seen trying and failing to hit a volleyball.
Once they hit social media, Twitter users rolled out the witticisms. While some worried DiCaprio's famous movie star face could be damaged, one user called for the photos to be put “in a museum, any museum, all of them if possible”.
Castaway references were plentiful thanks to Tom Hanks’ ball 'friend' Wilson, as well as a pitch for a sequel that now needs to happen. There were also references to the rest of Leo's film career, including his famous Oscars wait.
One user, @JayShams, even went on a deep dive to uncover who “the volleyball caught making out” with Leonardo DiCaprio was.
A lot of users also honed in on one detail: the telltale blue and red Mets cap that DiCaprio was wearing. Many poked fun at the fact that DiCaprio was a New York Mets supporter, with some joking that his accident made sense due to the performance of the team.
This isn't the first time DiCaprio has become an unwilling Internet sensation. Shots of him strutting jovially down the street were snapped and quickly photoshopped walking into unusual situations, including Mordor and Twilight. And of course, in the lead up to his Django Unchained Oscar campaign many made memes about DiCaprio being taunted by Oscars statues.
And then, after years of being nominated for best actor, DiCaprio finally won for The Revenant - bringing the meme machine full circle.
Besides playing volleyball with friends, DiCaprio is currently focusing his efforts on environmental activism with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.
With a major focus on combatting climate change, DiCaprio's Instagram is flooded with calls for his audience to help save the environment, amidst the occasional press shot for his Tarantino-directed film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
