Lena Headey to return to TV as 'unconventional teacher' for Showtime pilot

Lena Headey is swapping her crown for classes.

The former "Game of Thrones" star is set to play the title character _ a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother _ in the new dramedy pilot "Rita."

It was announced Thursday that the show's pilot was picked up by Showtime. The project will then either be continued or dropped by the network.

"Rita is a deliciously subversive character who will make you laugh and cry as she continuously challenges the hypocrisy around her," Jana Winograde, one of the network's presidents of entertainment, said. "It goes without saying that Lena Headey is a force, whose essence is ideal to take on this wonderfully dynamic lead role."

The Emmy nominee will also serve as an executive producer of the show.

Headey's eight-season run as Cersei Lannister came to an end in May. She was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe.
