Leeds Extinction Rebellion boat almost towed with pair still inside

Extinction Rebellion's big yellow boat almost left Leeds city centre with two accidental passengers.

There were amusing scenes on Victoria Bridge this morning after Extinction Rebellion protesters found two stowaways aboard their big yellow boat as they prepared for it to be towed.

A man who had been asleep inside emerged as the protest boat, emblazoned with the words 'act now', was about to be removed from the road.

A woman was also discovered as Extinction Rebellion protesters loaded hay bales onto the boat as they broke down their and prepared to leave.

The climate change activists took over Victoria Bridge on Monday morning and have occupied the road all week, camping overnight at the site.

Yesterday the group marched to Briggate to stage a 'die-in' protest.

Activists are now cleaning the bridge as their occupation comes to an end.

The group issued three demands to the government as part of the demonstration, with similar road occupations taking place in protests taking place in Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, and London.

They are:

  1. The government must tell the truth by delcaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change;
  2. The government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025;
  3. The government must create and be led by the decisions of the citizens assembly on climate and ecological justice.
