Justin Timberlake has addressed a selfie which could have landed him in jail despite the honourable intentions behind it.
Earlier this week, the “Rock Your Body” singer shared a photo of himself casting his vote for the US presidential election in his home state of Tennessee. Alongside the picture, he wrote a caption urging his 37.2 million followers to exercise their right to vote.
However, a new law enacted last year bars voters from taking photos or videos while they are inside polling stations and his selfie was put “under review” by the District Attorney’s office. On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Shelby Country District Attorney said they will not be proceeding with the investigation and Timberlake breathed a sigh of relief.
Addressing the incident for the first time, the 35-year-old said he had “no idea” his picture erred on the wrong side of the law.
Timberlake mocked his “super quiet, under the radar” vote during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
“Get out and vote,” Timberlake affirmed. “But don’t take a picture of yourself,” he warned.
