Jet ski rider dies after accident off South Stradbroke Island

It is believed several people helped give first aid but the person died at the scene.

A 54-year-old man has died after falling off a jet ski into the surf at South Stradbroke Island near the Gold Coast.

Emergency crews were called to the north seaway about 8:00am after reports a man had been pulled from the water with critical injuries.

It is believed several people witnessed the accident.

The man, from Hope Island on the Gold Coast, was taken to shore by witnesses who tried to perform CPR but he could not be revived.

Police said no other vessels were involved in the incident.

Senior Sergeant Jay Notaro said the man did nothing dangerous and was with three friends when he fell from the jet ski into the water.

"At that time he was conscious — his friends got into the water because he started to struggle in the water … they managed to pull him to shore," he said.

"He went into unconsciousness. They performed CPR for more than half an hour but he passed away.

"Members of the public also stopped and provided assistance. It appears he was doing nothing wrong.

"Some white water has hit him, he came off the jet ski and from that time he was struggling in the water," Senior Sergeant Notaro said.

"I guess this is just a tragic set of circumstances I can't see anything that would have saved this man's life.

"I guess an autopsy will confirm if it was a medical condition."

The man's death occurred a day after another man drowned at Frenchman's Beach on North Stradbroke Island.

That man died while swimming at an unpatrolled beach.

South Stradbroke Island lies between the Gold Coast Spit and North Stradbroke Island.

There is no pharmacy or resident doctor on the island and four-wheel drive access is limited as transport to the rugged island is via boat only.

There are also no public vehicle barge services to the island.

Jet skis users have to adhere to go-slow rules and no anchoring in designated areas.

There are three campgrounds on the island and two resorts.
