Jermaine Beckford explains worry over Newcastle United 'mentality shift'

Jermaine Beckford says a lack of a goal scorer is the biggest issue with Newcastle United's newfound attacking intent.

Steve Bruce has tried to get more players forwards in recent matches but, ahead of facing Wolves, the Magpies had lost three of their last four matches, albeit including difficult fixtures against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Magpies also dominated the opening stages of their game against Wolves but failed to find a breakthrough, which was reflected in what Beckford said pre-match.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Premier League striker said he could see that Bruce had tried to operate more on the front foot, but that he was concerned there was not the sort of goal scorer needed to put chances away.

Laura Woods and Bayo Akinfenwa talk to Callum Wilson about recovering from injury, choosing Newcastle, scoring for England

He said: "They’ve been difficult fixtures, but you can see a slight mentality shift.

"The issue they have is a goal scorer, that’s the problem.

"You’ve got Joelinton up top, who, for me, isn’t the person you’re looking to get you out of a hole. It’s just a matter of finding out how to make him fit in the team you currently have."

One Newcastle player that Beckford is a fan of, though, is Allain Saint-Maximin.

Beckford says the popular French winger is the sort of player that will attract neutral fans to tune into Magpies matches.

"I love this guy, honestly, I love this guy," he said.

"He is so energetic, he’s one of those players where you can give him the ball and you don’t know what he’s going to do, or what’s coming next, he’s exciting.

"Everyone will tune in and see what he does next, defenders don’t know what he’s going to do because he doesn’t. I’m a fan."
