PITTSBURGH _ Tom Kuhnhackl laughed at the notion he would receive a tribute video from his former team. Then he shrugged off a pregame question asking what it would be like to score a goal against the Penguins.
Both happened.
Kuhnhackl, a fourth-liner playing with Cal Clutterbuck injured, scored a third-period goal that helped stem the Penguins' momentum and lead the Islanders to a 6-3 win on a somber Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena.
The game was preceded by a ceremony mourning the loss of 11 lives at a mass shooting at the nearby Tree of Life Synagogue on Saturday.
The Islanders (6-4-1), who got two goals from Jordan Eberle, swept their three-game road trip and will again face the Penguins (6-2-2) on Thursday night at Barclays Center. The Penguins had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Neither starting goalie finished the game.
The Penguins' Matt Murray was pulled after allowing four goals on nine shots in 31:56 and Robin Lehner exited after making 23 saves in two periods with an apparent injury.
Kuhnhackl, who won two Stanley Cups in three seasons with the Penguins before signing a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Islanders, was honored for his time in Pittsburgh with a video tribute during a stoppage at 6:18 of the second period concluding with "Thank You Tom Kuhnhackl."
He collected a rebound off the left post and banked a shot past Casey DeSmith (14 saves) at 9:44 of the third period to make it 6-3.
"If I score that'll be great," Kuhnhackl said before the game with a laugh. "It'd be nice to get the win in this building."
Matt Martin took a feed from Casey Cizikas to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead at 9:32 of the second period and Jordan Eberle chased Murray with a power-play goal at 11:56. Eberle then made it 5-2 at 13:49 of the second period on a goal that withstood an offside challenge by the Penguins.
But Lehner said something to the coaching staff as he skated off the ice at the end of the second period and Thomas Greiss (12 saves), who stopped 38 shots in Sunday's 2-1 win at Carolina, came on in relief. He allowed a goal to Evgeni Malkin on a backhander at the crease at 1:23 of the third period on the first shot he faced as the Penguins came within 5-3.
The Islanders took a 2-0 lead at 12:28 of the first period on goals from Andrew Ladd and Brock Nelson within one minute, 45 seconds. But Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock knocked the puck past Lehner and then Sidney Crosby tied it at 17:41 of the second period.
