Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast sudden change as warmer than usual period pinpointed

Ireland's weather is set to turn milder in the coming week with temperatures picking up back to normal levels by next weekend.

The freezing cold conditions of the last few days look set to pass with much more pleasant conditions to follow.

And Met Eireann's monthly forecast has one week to look forward to with May 3 onwards expected to see "above average" temperatures.

The national forecaster says: "Towards early May there are signals low pressure may be more dominant than normal bringing a risk of showery weather. Rainfall totals are forecast to be slightly above normal, whilst mean air temperatures are predicted to be a little warmer than average for May."

For the next two days however it will remain chilly at night but gradually get warmer during the day time.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Cold and bright this morning with frost gradually clearing under spells of sunshine. Scattered showers of rain or sleet in the northwest will spread further southeastwards through the morning. In the afternoon, cloud will gradually build over the northern half of the country, bringing patchy outbreaks of rain to Connacht and west Ulster. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees, coldest over Ulster, in a light to moderate north to northwest breeze.

"Tonight will become cloudy across the country as scattered outbreaks of light rain spread southeastwards, turning to sleet at times over higher ground. Rain will generally clear eastwards overnight but further patchy outbreaks of rain will push into western counties later. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees, coldest over Ulster, with some frost forming in a light westerly or variable breeze."

Monday will see another temperature recovery as we get back into the double digits, although there could be plentiful rain showers.

The forecaster said: "Tomorrow, Monday, will start generally cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain in the west gradually spreading eastwards through the morning and afternoon. Some bright or sunny spells will develop in the evening as showers become confined to the eastern half of the country. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in a light westerly or variable breeze.

"There will be some showers or outbreaks of rain early in the coming week but high pressure will come to dominate our weather as the week goes on. This will bring a more settled spell with a good deal of dry weather and temperatures gradually recovering closer to normal for the time of year."
